In March 2010, the "Ejari" registration procedure became mandatory for all tenancy agreements in Dubai. The on-line portal (overseen by RERA) requires landlords (or their agents) to register all leases, including renewals, cancellations, terminations and transfers, with a training requirement and fee payable prior to use. RERA's vision of establishing 'a robust regulatory system to protect individual rights' continues to have some initial IT problems and manual registration with RERA is often still advisable. However, once the current problems have been resolved, the Ejari system will provide a quicker, efficient and transparent registration process for tenancy agreements, which can only help in the development of a more sustainable future for the real estate market in the UAE.
