In a March 25, 2010 letter, a bi-partisan group of Members of the House of Representatives Energy and Commerce Committee urged the FTC to investigate complaints that Google inappropriately used private user information in its launch of the new Buzz service. The letter also expressed concern that Google’s purchase of AdMob may adversely “affect competition and Google’s incentives to offer robust consumer privacy protections.” Of particular concern to the Members was Google’s practice of automatically using consumers’ private e-mail address books to create public contact lists for Buzz, a practice which Google has ceased since Buzz’s initial launch.
