In 2007 Matthew Taylor, MP for Truro and St Austell, was asked to carry out a review of how land use and planning could provide better support for rural businesses and the provision of new affordable housing.
The report was published on 23 July 2008. With a strong focus on sustainable development, it concludes that a fundamental shake-up of planning and affordable housing policy is vital to breathe new life and prosperity into rural communities. It reveals that the high cost of homes coupled with the low wages of rural workers are creating unsustainable pressures within rural areas. The report deals with issues of migration to the countryside, house prices, local wages, and problems in the planning system. There may be changes to the planning system as a result although the Government has yet to act on the recommendations.
