On 18 January 2019, French President Emmanuel Macron announced his intention to appoint Marie-Laure Denis as the next president of the French Data Protection Supervisory Authority (CNIL).
If her nomination is confirmed by the Parliament, Marie-Laure Denis will take over the presidency of the CNIL on 1st February 2019, a position held by Isabelle Falque-Pierrotin since 2011.
2019 is expected to be a busy year for the new appointee as she will essentially have to:
- Continue assisting organizations in making the transition to GDPR;
- Oversee the transition to the ePrivacy Regulation once it is adopted; and
- Ensure those new regulations are properly enforced, and handle the ever growing number of complaints lodged with the CNIL.
Like the former head of the CNIL, Marie-Laure Denis previously worked at the French Supreme Administrative Court (Conseil d’Etat) and for several ministers. She then joined the French Audiovisual Authority (Conseil Supérieur de l’Audiovisuel – CSA) and the French Telecommunications Regulator (Autorité de régulation des communications électroniques et des postes – ARCEP).
