On 6 April 2012, the qualifying period for unfair dismissals will increase from one to two years. BIS announced in January this year that the new two-year qualifying period will only apply to employees whose employment begins on or after 6 April 2012. Those already in employment prior to 6 April 2012, will be subject to the current qualifying period of one year.

It is hoped that the new qualifying period will enhance business growth and improve confidence within the workplace.
