The government have announced their intention to carry out the first ever review of statutory duties. This review fits in with the coalition’s decentralisation ideals and seeks to assess what CLG describes as the “cumulative burden” of hundreds of legal duties imposed on local government. At the moment, the review will cover 1294 statutory duties, details of which are available on the CLG website. CLG has also opened its own informal consultation on the statutory duties inviting the public to comment by the 25 April 2011 on those statutory duties they believe are vital and those which are no longer needed.
We will be preparing a comment on the statutory review for our next edition of FuturePerfect? so keep your eyes out for that!
