The Government has recently announced that couples converting civil partnerships to marriages will now receive backdated marriage certificates.
This follows pressure from couples in civil partnerships who had objected to the Government’s earlier proposed “certificate of conversion”.
The certificate itself will be almost identical to a marriage certificate and to emphasise this the “when married” date will be the date of the original civil partnership.
This will make it clear that legal rights and obligations have not changed.
Couples in England and Wales will be able to convert their civil partnerships to marriages at registry offices from 10 December 2014.
