On May 21, 2019 a New York City jury award plaintiff Donna Olson and her husband Robert $25,000,000 in compensatory damages in connection with her development of mesothelioma. The Olsons had claimed she developed this cancer as a result of using Johnson & Johnson's baby powder and Shower to Shower products for decades. The trial was held before Judge Gerald Lebovitz in New York County, and was the first talc-related mesothelioma verdict against Johnson & Johnson in the City. Further, the jury also found that a punitive damages award was warranted. Johnson & Johnson has been sued in thousands of mesothelioma and ovarian cancer cases across the country related to its talcum powder products and has had mixed success at trial – while there have been several defense verdicts there have also been a number of large jury verdicts against the company, including a $117,000,000 verdict in New Jersey during 2018.
