In the Official Gazette of August 9, 2017, the Government of the Republic of Guatemala, published the Protocol of the Special Agreement between Guatemala and Belize were both ratified to submit the Territorial, Insular and Maritime Claim of Guatemala to the International Court of Justice, May 25, 2015. The text of the Protocol signed by Guatemala and Belize was published along with the preceding ratification and the concluded agreements are as follows:

Article 1: Ensure that the citizens of both countries will be fully informed of the differences between the two countries on the claim made by Guatemala and the need to resolve them definitively by the International Court of Justice.

Article 2: To submit in the shortest possible time the claim to the International Court of Justice.

Article 3: The Secretary of the Court shall be notified of the Special Agreement jointly or by any of the Parties, within a month following the date on which the popular consultation in each country has approved the submission of the dispute to the Court.

Article 4: The Protocol shall remain in force when the exchange of instruments of ratification takes place and shall remain in force unless and until the Parties agree to terminate it.

This Protocol was approved by the Congress of the Republic of Guatemala through Decree No. 47-2016 dated October 27, 2016; and ratified by the President of the Republic by means of an instrument dated December 19, 2016.
