The Charity Commission and Fundraising Regulator have joined forces to produce a data protection alert which warns of the critical importance of complying with data protection rules, particularly with regards to handling donor data.

The alert follows the ICO enforcement actions taken in December against two charities.

The alert contains a few 'immediate actions' which the Commission and Fundraising Regulator expect relevant organisations to take straight away; including "reviewing fair processing statements to ensure they are explicit, clear, transparent and highly visible" and to "notify the Commission about any investigation of their charity by the Information Commissioner by reporting a serious incident".

Organisations should ensure that (where applicable) its charitable arms and any close charitable associations are aware of the guidance and that the recommendations and requirements noted in the guidance are considered and followed as soon as possible.
