A federal court has reportedly sentenced a California company that makes prefabricated concrete products to pay a $3.5-million fine after the entry of a guilty plea to one count of negligently violating the Clean Water Act (CW A). United States v. Kie-Con Inc., No. 10-934 (N.D. Cal. 9/1/11). The company will also spend $750,000 to fund watershed and ecosystem improvement projects in the San Francisco Bay area and another $750,000 to the Contra Costa County District Attorney for environmental projects. Court records indicate that between January 2004 and April 2007, company employees routinely used a hose to pump concrete process water from sedimentation basins to a storm drain that emptied into the San Joaquin River.
