From 1 October 2009, the new Supreme Court will replace the House of Lords as the highest court of appeal in the UK. The Supreme Court will take over the judicial function of the House of Lords only and will be the final court of appeal in civil cases throughout the whole of the UK, and the final court of appeal in criminal cases for England, Wales and Northern Ireland. All appeals lodged and proceedings ongoing in the House of Lords prior to 1 October 2009 will automatically transfer to the Supreme Court.
