In December 2005, Starbucks, known as Xing Ba Ke in many Chinese-speaking territories, finally won a long drawn-out lawsuit in Shanghai against a Chinese coffee shop under the same Chinese name, and was awarded RMB500,000. The Shanghai company quickly appealed. At the end of 2006, the Shanghai High Court upheld the lower court’s decision on infringement of a famous trade mark and unfair competition; and issued final judgment in favour of Starbucks.
