EPA has issued a proposed rule expanding the agency’s list of approved methods that municipal wastewater treatment plants and companies monitoring their wastewater discharges under the Clean Water Act can use to test for pollutants under the NPDES program. 75 Fed. Reg. 58,024 (9/23/10). NPDES permit holders must use EPA-approved test methods. The proposed rule includes new methods that would require new technologies and new versions of EPA-approved methods. The agency is also proposing to approve methods developed by voluntary standards organizations such as ASTM International and the Standards Methods Committee, a joint committee of the American Public Health Association, American Water Works Association and Water Environment Federation. EPA will accept comments on the proposal through November 22, 2010.
