The Commission is consulting on a revised Block Exemption Regulation for the insurance sector. The current block exemption expires in March 2010 and provides a blanket exemption to certain agreements that might otherwise be found in breach of the competition law rules. However, following a detailed "sector" inquiry into the insurance industry, the Commission concluded that the block exemption was no longer justified in its present format. The Commission therefore intends to renew the exemption for information exchange and insurance pools but says it will be tougher on monitoring and enforcement. It also thinks agreements on standard policy conditions and agreements on security devices are not specific to the insurance sector and so it is no longer appropriate to include them in the new block exemption. It asks for comment from interested parties by 30 November
