Yesterday, the U.S. Department of the Treasury and the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) released data for the Home Affordable Modification Program (HAMP) from January. The report shows that the number of homeowners with loan modifications (116,000) has nearly doubled since December of last year, with 76,000 more modifications pending. "In total, over 1 million homeowners have started trial modifications and nearly 1.3 million offers for trial modifications have been extended to homeowners." These modifications represent 940,000 homeowners with savings of $2.2 billion in mortgage payments.
