On 25 January, the UK’s Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport said in a statement that he will consider remedies proposed by News Corporation to avoid a referral of its proposed buy-out of broadcaster BSkyB to the Competition Commission. The Secretary of State said that he still intends to refer the merger to the Competition Commission because on the evidence available, he considers that it may be the case that the merger may operate against the public interest in media plurality. However, before doing so, the Secretary of State said that he would consider any undertakings in lieu offered by any merging party which have the potential to prevent or otherwise mitigate the potential threats to media plurality identified in Ofcom’s report of 31 December 2010.
