The Budget Control Act of 2011 imposed an across-the-board spending reduction, commonly referred to as sequestration, to reduce federal spending. Absent congressional legislation, these cuts will go into effect in January. Under sequestration, the FEC will see a $5 million reduction to its budget in FY 2013. While Members of Congress on both sides of the aisle and President Obama support alternative methods of reducing federal spending, it is unclear whether these cuts will be avoided in their entirety. It is unclear how a $5 million reduction would impact the FEC's activities, but it could reduce the resources available for enforcement of campaign finance laws. The FEC currently is funded at $66 million annually.
