Citing a tentative determination that pump-out stations around Lake Erie are adequate, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has proposed establishing a no-discharge zone for the New York portion of the lake, covering 593 square miles of the lake, its tributaries and bays, and 84 miles of shoreline. The proposed no-discharge zone would prohibit discharge of sewage from any boat into the lake and require that sewage be pumped instead. The proposal is open for public comment until January 6, 2013.
