The Polish Sejm (one of the chambers of the Polish Parliament) appointed Dr Wojciech Wiewiórowski as the new General Inspector for Protection of Personal Data ("GIODO").

Dr Wiewiórowski was born in 13 June 1971. In 1995 he graduated from the Law and Administration Department of Gdansk University with an LLM. In 2000 he obtained a Ph.D. in legal sciences at the same University. His Ph.D. thesis related to constitutional law. Dr Wiewiórowski is an instructor and lecturer at Gdansk University and he is the head of the university's legal informatics department.

He is a recognised specialist in the protection of personal data, as well as Polish and European law relating to new technologies, security of information and the public sector information systems.

Dr Wiewiórowski is the author of numerous publications in IT and New Technologies and student handbook "Legal Informatics: Information technology for lawyers and public administration".

Between 2006 and 2008 he was an Adviser at the Ministry of Interior and Administration and in October 2008 he became a Director of the Information Systems Department at the Ministry of Interior and Administration.

Minister Wiewiórowski takes office from 4 August 2010 for a 4-year term.
