A presidential panel has joined the call for amending the Electronic Communications Privacy Act to require the government to get a search warrant in order to obtain the contents of any electronic communications.  The recommendation is part of a report, “Big Data:  Seizing Opportunities, Preserving Values,” that reviews how “big data” is transforming society and the relationships among government, citizens, and businesses.  The report also recommends a variety of limits on how the government and businesses use data collected about individuals.
