On July 26, 2012, the Obama Administration announced what it characterizes as a “ground-breaking partnership” among federal and state governments, private health insurance organizations, and other stakeholders to prevent health care fraud.  The partnership is intended to share information on specific fraudulent activities and best practices in order to improve detection and prevent payment of fraudulent health care billings.  One goal for the partnership is to identify “specific schemes, utilized billing codes and geographical fraud hotspots” to enable private and public payers to take action to prevent losses before they occur.  A potential long-range goal would be to use sophisticated technology and analytics on industry-wide healthcare data in an effort to predict and detect health care fraud schemes.
