On April 23, 2010, following the explosion and fire on the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig, Senator Bill Nelson (D-FL) requested that DOI initiate a broad investigation of the oil and gas industry's safety record, including offshore drilling practices over the past decade. Senator Mary Landrieu (D-LA) has requested an investigation into the cause of the incident, and Senator Nelson indicated that he plans to follow suit. In a letter to DOI Secretary Salazar, Nelson expressed strong concern that the incident “raises concerns about claims by the industry that advances in technology have made drilling safe not only for workers but for the environment.” See today's BNA Daily Report for Executives [subscription required] for more on this story.
