There is currently a proposal for a coal-fired power plant in Marshalltown, Iowa, but if a top climate scientist has it his way it will not be built. James Hansen, who runs NASA's Goddard Space Center, spoke up in protest of the 600 MW Alliant Energy Plant project. Hansen is against the new power plant because he believes that government will eventually be forced to regulate coal plants out of existence due to growing environmental concerns. Hansen said, "It would be a tremendous waste of money to put money into coal-fired power plants at this time, because it has become clear that we're going to need to phase out coal use where it is not possible to capture and sequester the carbon dioxide."

Alliant Energy has planned to build the plant so that carbon sequestration can be built in later when it is feasible. The current cost of the plant is $1.5 billion.
