As we have already demonstrated, data protection is getting tougher for the NHS and, with new powers in the hands of the Information Commissioner to make sure we comply and to punish those who get it wrong, any help is to gratefully received.

There is so much guidance available, much of it complicated, long-winded and hard to penetrate.

Now the Information Commissioner’s Office has set out some clear and “easy to read” guidance. There is a new "plain English" guide to data protection to give organisations practical advice about the Data Protection Act and dispel data protection myths.

The guide draws on practical, business-based examples to illustrate the principles of the Data Protection Act. As well as that, it gives us an insight into the thinking and approach likely to be taken by the Commissioner. The guide can be accessed here.
