The Coalition's programme for government outlines key priorities in all areas. The banking priorities are:

  • reform of the banking system;
  • introduction of a banking levy;
  • robust action to tackle unacceptable bonuses in the financial services sector;
  • fostering diversity in financial services, encouraging mutuals and creating a more competitive banking industry;
  • taking steps to reduce systemic risk in the banking system and asking an independent commission to investigate and report within one year on the possibility of separating retail and investment banking in a sustainable way;
  • giving BoE control of macro-prudential regulation and oversight of micro-prudential regulation;
  • not joining the euro;
  • creating a free national financial advice service, funded by the financial services sector; and
  • creating a single agency to tackle serious economic crime.
