Planning Provisions for Affordable Housing – Discussion Paper
The Discussion Paper has arisen from the State Governments commitment to develop model planning policies and provisions for the development of dedicated affordable housing. The Discussion Paper sets out a number of possible options and is seeking feedback on a range of potential options that could be used. The options that have been raised in the Discussion Paper are as follows:
- Retaining the current focus on the promotion of housing diversity as a means to facilitate affordable housing
- Giving formal status to measures to allow voluntary incentives that encourage and promote (rather than require the provision of) affordable housing
- Apply mandatory provisions to require affordable housing in selected areas
- Enable mandatory provisions to apply to all areas.
The possibility of mandatory requirements being adopted for providing affordable housing are of considerable significance for land owners and developers and others engaged in the industry.
