A joint study by Greenpeace, the European Solar Thermal Electricity Association and the International Energy Agency’s SolarPACES group says that there is the potential for solar energy to produce 25 percent of the world’s power by 2050. The solar power would come from the desert, where solar companies would use mirrors to increase the power coming from the sun’s rays. If done properly and with the required investment, which is significant, the desert solar plants could generate 7 percent of the world’s power by 2030, with an increase to 25 percent by 2050. Of course, transmission of the energy from deserts to population centers would be a significant challenge.
