Following the Victorian Government introducing new laws to protect advance care directives, the Government has announced that it will provide $7.2 million in funding to support a new framework to assist those with a terminal illness to die at home. The framework is being developed in response to community concern about our current palliative care system being outdated. The funding will go towards expanding specialist palliative care expertise, training for General Practitioners, additional respite services and training and support for carers.

One of the key aspects of the framework is the delivery of patient-centred/individually-tailored care. The framework will provide clear expectations surrounding how end of life and palliative care services will be delivered and ensure all Victorians are provided with safe and effective end of life care.
