This is the ambitious target that the European Commission has set itself under its new five-year strategy for health and safety at work. Between 2002 and 2004 the rate of fatal accidents at work in the EU15 fell by 17% while the rate of workplace accidents leading to absences of more than 3 days fell by 20%. The Commission is however concerned that progress has not been uniform across Member States. It therefore intends to target those sectors and companies with the highest accident rates in an attempt to further improve health and safety protection for workers
