Recently released figures show that the number of construction site fatalities in 2007/8 fell slightly, with 72 construction workers killed on site, as opposed to 79 in 2006/7.
As against that, however, the number of non fatal injuries rose to 11,120, from a figure of 10,849 for 2006/7. This contrasted with a fall by an average of 5% in non fatal injuries over other major industry sectors, including public services, transport, manufacturing and hospitality. The increase in the construction figures might be explained by expansion of activity in that year, and possibly improved reporting systems. However, the HSE will consider any increase in figures as a matter of concern.
