The South Korean president’s brother

The elder brother of President Lee Myung-bak, Mr Lee Sang-deuk has been arrested following accusations of bribery.

Prosecutors claim that the former lawmaker received 700 million won (about US$613,000) in bribes from two detained bankers in return for helping them avoid regulatory audits and punishment.

Meanwhile, South Korea’s ruling Saenuri Party has blocked the arrest of a sitting Saenuri lawmaker, Mr Chung Doo Un, who is suspected of conspiring with Mr Sang-deuk. Law-enforcement authorities need parliamentary approval in order to imprison a lawmaker while parliament is in session.
