The Department for Business, Innovation and Skills has launched an online survey which will close on 30 November 2010 on how to improve the low proportion of female directors in Britain's top businesses. In 2009, only 12.2% of directors of the FTSE 100 companies and 7.3% of the FTSE 250 companies were women, despite evidence that companies with a strong female representation at board and top management level outperform those without.

Following the results of the survey, the Government intends to develop a business strategy to promote gender equality which will be published in February 2011.
