Unite has announced that it will hold an election for the post of General Secretary early next year and not in 2015, as originally planned. The current General Secretary, Len McCluskey, was elected in 2010.

Unite explained that it had made this decision to provide clear leadership during its ongoing integration, the current economic situation and to avoid a vacuum at the time of the next general election (scheduled for 2015).

At the same time, Paul Kenny, General Secretary of GMB, has announced that he is standing down next year before the end of his term.
