On 26 November 2013, Insurance Ireland announced that it had called on the Minister for Health to ensure that no more than €30 million will be raised during 2014 in new charges on public hospital beds (introduced under the Health (Amendment) Act 2013). Insurance Ireland states that the Minister previously committed that he would amend the rates provided for in the 2013 Act if this was necessary in order to ensure that the €30 million threshold was not exceeded. In Insurance Ireland's view, this is now necessary as a result of the outcome of assessments carried out by the Health Insurance Authority and Deloitte (which indicated that the charges specified under the 2013 Act would result in a significantly greater sum being generated).
