A leading UK snack manufacturer, Walkers Snack Foods Ltd, has been fi ned a total of £20,000 and ordered to pay costs of £10,000 after an incident resulted in a worker breaking his leg. A large 400kg block of compacted snack waste fell onto a worker when it became stuck as he lifted it into a wheeled bin. He attempted to move the bin with the assistance of another worker causing the pellet to fall onto him and fracture his lower leg. He was off work for a period of 15 weeks.
HSE representatives told the court that the work had not been properly planned or supervised and was carried out in an unsafe manner. The worker did not have the experience or training required to allow him to plan or process the task.
Walkers Snack Foods Ltd pled guilty to breaching Regulation 3(1) of the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 and Regulation 8(1) of the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998.
