On 9 December 2013, EIOPA published a report (dated 27 November 2013) setting out good supervisory practices in relation to knowledge and ability of distributor of insurance products. Amongst other matters, EIOPA recommends that such distributors should (a) have appropriate knowledge of insurance contract law, regulatory and supervisory standards and consumer protection requirements and (b) demonstrate consistent ethical and professional conduct, communicate effectively with regard to contractual terms and risks, and provide suitable recommendations for each customer. EIOPA also advocates the practice of requiring the updating of knowledge and ability through continuous professional development.
