While it may be more than a decade before fully autonomous vehicles are on the road, auto makers, including Mercedes-Benz and Cadillac have been hard at work developing a self-driving car. These vehicles are logging thousands of miles at research facilities around the country in an attempt to achieve a level of responsiveness equal or superior to a human driver. In anticipation of this technology, California, Florida, Georgia and the District of Columbia have passed laws governing autonomous vehicles. Moving forward, insurers and state authorities will have to decide how to assign liability for an accident if an inanimate object (rather than a person) is driving.
