The Competition Authority has announced that it has decided to carry out a full (phase 2) investigation in relation to the proposed acquisition by Heineken N.V. of Scottish & Newcastle’s business in Ireland, namely, Beamish & Crawford plc. Both parties are involved in the production, sale and distribution of alcoholic drinks to the on-trade and off-trade in the State. The Competition Authority’s review of this proposed acquisition follows a decision by the European Commission on 3rd April 2008 to partially refer, under Article 9 of the European Merger Regulation.
