The FPA has raised concern over the level of unplanned pregnancies in women over the age of 35 years. Whilst fertility is known to decline from around the mid-thirties, a misguided belief that they can no longer get pregnant is causing women in their thirties and beyond to throw caution (and contraception) to the wind. The most recent abortion rates for England and Wales for women aged 40 to 44 years match those for under 16s, with an abortion rate of four per 1,000 women in both groups in 2008.
