On 14 April 2011, the OFT instigated a short market study into extended warranties for domestic electrical goods. This follows a review of the aftermarkets for domestic electrical goods which raised concerns that there is a lack of competition in the sector. The competition concerns stem from retailers’ advantage in being able to sell warranties at the same time as they sell the electrical goods. The OFT aims to establish what action, if any, is needed to ensure that consumers are receiving value for money in a market worth over £750m. The study is due to be published this summer.
