The Ministry of the Attorney General has released a consultation paper titled “Provincial Offences Act Streamlining Review.” In the paper, a multiparty working group identifies options for Provincial Offences Act (POA) reform that would maintain simple, fair and accessible POA procedures for all Ontarians, including unrepresented defendants. In particular, the consultation paper highlights various ideas for reform, including those related to (i) improving service to the public and access to justice; (ii) enhancing the enforcement of POA fines; and (iii) simplifying procedures and making more efficient use of available resources. The Ministry of the Attorney General is accepting comments on the paper until March 13, 2009.
