On 22 July 2014, the Financial Ombudsman Service in the UK (FOS) published its monthly 'ombudsman news' bulletin which focussed this month on complaints relating to payment protection insurance (PPI). The bulletin which contains a number of case studies, explain the FOS's approach to complaints about mortgage PPI, comparative (or alternative) redress and the set-off of PPI compensation. The bulletin also includes updates on complaints data for the first quarter of the 2014/15 financial year, and shows the number of complaints received by the FOS and the proportion that were decided in favour of consumers during the period. The data identifies that the overall number of complaints to the FOS is 50% higher than in 2012, although fewer than those received in the same period last year, and that 67% of new complaints were about PPI.
