The news that - for the third consecutive month - more than 20% of all non-food shopping took place online highlights the challenge which the physical retailing world faces.

The latest British Retail Consortium-KPMG Online Retail Sales Monitor shows showed that e-commerce sales rose by 9.5% in March, and for the third month in a row accounted for £1-in-every-five that is spent on non-food items.

Karen Mason comments: “These statistics - combined with the news that High Street and Shopping Centre footfall fell again in March - highlights the growing influence of online retailing. Landlords need to look at what they can do to improve the attractiveness of their retail environments to woo shoppers away from the sofa.

“In many cases, this will entail active asset management and looking at how to re-engineer the retail offer.”
