Many persons have waited years for approval of I-485 Adjustment of Status applications while USCIS waits to clear background name checks with the FBI. USCIS recently announced that it will change its policy to avoid such long delays. USCIS will submit the case to the FBI. If USCIS has not heard back from the FBI within 180 days, USCIS will go ahead and approve the I-485 application. USCIS is now reviewing long-pending cases in their service centers to issue approvals for cases which can now be approved under the new policy. The new policy does not apply to pending N-400 naturalization applications.
