The OFT has launched a market study into the sale of second-hand cars due to the large number of consumer complaints relating to the sector. The purpose of the study will be to determine why there have been so many complaints and to investigate whether existing consumer protection legislation is sufficient and effective in the sector. The OFT will be working with the second-hand car industry, local authority Trading Standards Services, consumer bodies and other interested parites. The OFT hopes to complete the study by the end of the year. Interested parties can submit written views by 5 June to secondhandcars@ oft.gsi.gov.uk.
