On June 27, 2009, Environment Canada issued an Environmental Code of Practice for Metal Mines (the Code), which describes the operational activities of the metal mining sector and associated environmental risks. The Code discusses environmental risks associated with the entire life cycle of a mine – from exploration to mine closure – and recommends environmental management practices that respond to these risks. Some of the Code’s recommended environmental management practices relate to the development and implementation of environmental management tools, the management of wastewater and mining wastes, and the prevention and control of environmental releases to air, water and land.
