In September Unison and GMB confirmed that they are developing their recently formed alliance, although no date has been set for starting merger talks. Unison described it as an "engagement" that could lead to marriage and, in the short term, they would negotiate together and campaign for joint recognition for collective bargaining in some areas. A merger would result in the largest trade union in the UK, with approximately two million workers and spanning local government, health, education and parts of the private sector. This move reflects a similar alliance between Unite and PCS (see our earlier briefing for more information).
