On 19 January 2011, APRA announced8 the release of its Annual Superannuation Bulletin9 for the financial year ended 30 June 2010. The media release summarises key statistics including that total superannuation assets increased during the year by $150 billion, or 13.9%, to $1.23 trillion. Industry funds showed the largest growth with assets increasing by 17.9% to $226.2 billion. The media release also notes that the Annual Superannuation Bulletin ‘includes, for the first time, features on asset exposures of superannuation funds and on gender diversity of licensed trustee boards’.

On 27 January 2011, APRA announced10 the release of the following performance data for certain APRA-regulated superannuation funds from 2004–2010:

  • Superannuation fund-level rates of return,11 which contains performance data on the 200 largest funds by asset size as annualised five-year and seven-year average returns, as well as for each of the seven years on a consistent basis.
  • Superannuation fund-level profiles and financial performance, which contains detailed data for each year from 2004–2010.  

The Superannuation Complaints Tribunal has recently released Issue No. 62 of its SCT Quarterly Bulletin: 1 October 2010 – 31 December 2010.12 Statistics reported in the Bulletin include that the total number of written complaints received decreased by 2.4% compared to the previous quarter and 61.2% of complaints were within jurisdiction (last quarter 66.2%). The SCT determined 42 cases during the quarter and the Trustee's decision was affirmed in 61.9% of these cases.
