On 1 November 2017, the data broking company Verso Group (UK) Limited was fined £80,000 by the ICO. The ICO has stated that Verso Group failed to comply with data protection law as it was not clear with consumers about what it was doing with their personal information used for direct marketing purposes. The ICO based the fine on Verso’s multiple, serious and systematic contraventions over a number of years as well as its unhelpful, obstructive conduct during the ICO’s investigation.
